Traders call a trade on a rise a long, and a trade on a fall a short. You'll come across these words everywhere.
An example. You opened a short on oil at $70 a barrel, for 10 barrels. The price fell to $65: a $5 difference per barrel, so $50 is yours. If the price had risen to $78, you would have lost $80.
