What it is
A currency pair — the price of one currency in terms of another: how many Japanese yen one US dollar buys. The yen has traditionally carried very low interest rates, so the pair depends heavily on the gap between Bank of Japan and Federal Reserve rates. In anxious times the yen is often bought as a safe haven, and the rate falls. It is quoted here to three decimal places. The currency market runs around the clock from Sunday evening to Friday evening; it is closed at weekends.
