What it is
An industrial metal: wiring, construction, electronics, electric cars. Demand for copper rises when the economy grows, which earned it the nickname “Dr Copper” — its price is read as a health check on global industry. It is quoted in US dollars per pound and depends on construction and industry in China, disruptions at mines in Chile and Peru, and the dollar. The price shown here is the futures contract for the nearest month — an agreement to deliver later at a price fixed today; when that contract expires, the price rolls to the next month. It trades almost around the clock on weekdays, and is closed at weekends.
