What it is
A precious metal with a double life: bought as a safe haven alongside gold, and at the same time used in industry — electronics, solar panels, medicine. It is priced in US dollars per troy ounce, the standard weight unit for precious metals, and depends on gold, the dollar and industrial demand. The price shown here is the futures contract for the nearest month — an agreement to deliver later at a price fixed today; when that contract expires, the price rolls to the next month. It trades almost around the clock on weekdays, and is closed at weekends.
