What it is
A rare metal whose main customer is the car industry: it goes into catalytic converters for petrol engines. Most of it is mined in Russia and South Africa, so the price depends heavily on supply from there and on the shift towards electric cars. It is quoted in US dollars per troy ounce, the standard weight unit for precious metals. The price shown here is the futures contract for the nearest month — an agreement to deliver later at a price fixed today; when that contract expires, the price rolls to the next month. It trades almost around the clock on weekdays, and is closed at weekends.
