What it is
A grade of oil produced in the North Sea, used as the pricing benchmark for a large share of the oil sold in Europe, Africa and Asia. It is quoted in US dollars per barrel — about 159 litres. The price depends on output decisions by OPEC+ (a group of oil-exporting countries), global demand, inventories and geopolitics in the Middle East. The price shown here is the futures contract for the nearest month — an agreement to deliver later at a price fixed today; when that contract expires, the price rolls to the next month. It trades almost around the clock on weekdays, and is closed at weekends.
