What it is
A metal that served as money for thousands of years and today acts as a reserve for central banks and a way to preserve capital in troubled times. It is priced in US dollars per troy ounce, the standard weight unit for precious metals. The price depends on central-bank interest rates, the dollar’s strength, inflation and global shocks. The price shown here is the futures contract for the nearest month — an agreement to deliver later at a price fixed today; when that contract expires, the price rolls to the next month. It trades almost around the clock on weekdays, with short breaks, and is closed at weekends.
