What it is
A currency pair — the price of one currency in terms of another: how many Chinese yuan one US dollar buys. The yuan does not float freely: the People’s Bank of China sets a reference rate every day and allows only limited movement around it. The rate therefore depends not just on the market but on official decisions, China’s trade with the US and the state of the Chinese economy. The currency market runs around the clock from Sunday evening to Friday evening; it is closed at weekends.
