What it is
A contract for arabica coffee, the main variety used by cafés and shops. Brazil is the largest producer, so frost or drought there lifts the price immediately; Colombia and Vietnam matter too. It trades on the ICE exchange in the US, priced in cents per pound, and depends on weather in producing countries, harvest size and the Brazilian real. The price shown here is the futures contract for the nearest month — an agreement to deliver later at a price fixed today; when that contract expires, the price rolls to the next month. It trades in sessions on weekdays, with breaks, and is closed at weekends.
