What it is
The fibre that fabrics and clothing are made from. Major producers are China, India, the US and Brazil; the contract trades on the ICE exchange in the US, priced in cents per pound. It depends on weather in the growing regions, demand from the textile industry, the price of synthetic fibres that compete with cotton, and the dollar. The price shown here is the futures contract for the nearest month — an agreement to deliver later at a price fixed today; when that contract expires, the price rolls to the next month. It trades in sessions on weekdays, with breaks, and is closed at weekends.
