What it is
The Dow Jones Industrial Average is one of the oldest stock-market indices, tracking 30 large American companies from different industries. An index is a single number that shows how a group of stocks moves on average. Its quirk: a company’s weight depends on its share price, not on the size of its business. You cannot buy the index itself; what trades are instruments based on it. It updates during US market hours, 9:30 to 16:00 New York time.
