What it is
A stock index made up of 500 of the largest US companies. An index is a single number that shows how a group of stocks moves on average. Each company’s weight depends on its size, so the big corporations move the index more than the small ones. It is regarded as the main gauge of the American market; you cannot buy the index itself; what trades are instruments based on it. It updates during US market hours, 9:30 to 16:00 New York time.
