What it is
Japan’s main stock index, covering 225 large companies on the Tokyo Stock Exchange: carmakers, electronics, banks, trading houses. An index is a single number that shows how a group of stocks moves on average. Like the Dow Jones, it is weighted by share price rather than company size. You cannot buy the index itself; what trades are instruments based on it. It updates during Tokyo exchange hours, with a lunch break — night and early morning for Europe.
