What it is
Britain’s main stock index, covering the 100 largest companies on the London Stock Exchange. An index is a single number that shows how a group of stocks moves on average. Many of them are international: oil and mining giants, banks, pharmaceuticals, earning most of their revenue outside Britain. You cannot buy the index itself; what trades are instruments based on it. It updates during exchange hours, 8:00 to 16:30 London time.
