What it is
Germany’s main stock index, covering the 40 largest companies on the Frankfurt exchange: carmakers, industry, chemicals, insurance, software. An index is a single number that shows how a group of stocks moves on average. A distinctive feature: the DAX counts dividends as if they were reinvested in the shares. You cannot buy the index itself; what trades are instruments based on it. It updates during exchange hours, 9:00 to 17:30 Frankfurt time.
