What it is
The gas that heats homes and fuels power plants in the US; the contract price is set at Henry Hub in Louisiana. It is quoted in US dollars per million British thermal units (MMBtu), a unit of energy. The price depends on the weather — a cold winter or hot summer lifts demand — on storage levels (a weekly report on Thursdays) and on exports of liquefied gas. The price shown here is the futures contract for the nearest month — an agreement to deliver later at a price fixed today; when that contract expires, the price rolls to the next month. It trades almost around the clock on weekdays, and is closed at weekends.
