What it is
Australia’s main stock index, covering the 200 largest companies on the Australian Securities Exchange. An index is a single number that shows how a group of stocks moves on average. Banks and mining companies that sell iron ore and coal to Asia carry a lot of weight. You cannot buy the index itself; what trades are instruments based on it. It updates during Sydney exchange hours — night-time for Europe.
