What it is
Hong Kong’s main stock index, covering the largest companies on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, many of them Chinese: tech giants, banks, property developers, insurers. An index is a single number that shows how a group of stocks moves on average. It is the usual window through which global investors look at China’s economy. You cannot buy the index itself; what trades are instruments based on it. It updates during Hong Kong exchange hours, with a lunch break.
