What it is
The Swiss Market Index is Switzerland’s main stock index, covering the 20 largest companies on the SIX Swiss Exchange. An index is a single number that shows how a group of stocks moves on average. Pharmaceuticals and food producers carry a lot of weight, which is why it is regarded as one of Europe’s most defensive indices. You cannot buy the index itself; what trades are instruments based on it. It updates during exchange hours, 9:00 to 17:30 Zurich time.
